The Indian Embassy in Cambodia has issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals, urging them to avoid traveling to areas near the Thailand–Cambodia border, where armed clashes have intensified over the past few days. The embassy has also provided an emergency helpline (+855 92881676) and an email ([email protected]) for Indians in distress.

A similar warning had been earlier issued by the Indian Embassy in Thailand, advising against travel to seven border provinces in Thailand—namely Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat—as fighting continues to spread.

Why This Matters

Deadly escalation: The clashes represent the most intense border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia in over a decade, involving artillery, rocket fire, and airstrikes, with at least 30 casualties and over 130,000 people displaced.

Humanitarian crisis: Hundreds of thousands have fled their homes; emergency evacuations and UN Security Council intervention underscore the severity.

Historical context: The roots of the dispute trace back to colonial-era border demarcations around the Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom temple areas, unresolved for decades.

Amid a critical Bangladesh–Thailand escalation and resulting displacement, Indian nationals in Cambodia should stay away from border zones and use the provided emergency helpline or email for assistance. Travelers to Thailand should also avoid specific provinces near the border and monitor official Thai updates.
